How to Select a Rotary Drum Screen

A rotary drum screen is a reliable solids‑liquid separation device used in wastewater treatment, food processing, and industrial applications. Selecting the right one requires evaluating several key factors.

1. Solids Loading & Particle Size
High solids loading calls for a robust drum with larger openings and a self‑cleaning mechanism. For fine particles (e.g., 0.5 mm), choose a drum with fine mesh or wedge wire. Low solids loading allows a simpler design.

2. Flow Rate & Hydraulic Capacity
Ensure the drum screen can handle your peak flow. Overloading causes carryover. Larger drum diameters and lengths increase capacity, but available space may limit size.

3. Internal vs. External Feed
This is a critical design choice.

• Internally fed (center‑in, out‑out): Wastewater enters inside the drum; solids are trapped on the inner surface and discharged as the drum rotates. Best for higher flow rates and where solids are sticky or fibrous, because the centrifugal action helps discharge.

• Externally fed (outside‑in): Water flows onto the outside of the drum; solids collect on the outer screen. Ideal for lower flows, fragile solids, or when you need easier access for cleaning. External feed often has lower headloss but may require more frequent washing.

Select internal feed for heavy‑duty municipal or industrial applications; external feed for gentle screening or smaller plants.

4. Cleaning Mechanism
Pressurized spray nozzles are common. For internal feed, nozzles are placed outside to clean the inner screen; for external feed, inside. Choose stainless steel nozzles for corrosion resistance.

5. Maintenance & Material
316L stainless steel is recommended for corrosive environments. Ensure easy access to bearings, seals, and spray bars. A variable‑speed drive helps optimize performance.
